Nothing For Us Without Us – In The Sustainable Development Goals

A Call to Action to Women Living with HIV

As we step further into 2016, we know this isn’t just the first few weeks of the New Year, but also the beginning of a new era in global development. The Millennium Development goals came to an official end in 2015, giving us much to celebrate, but also much more work to be done to secure the rights and to meet the needs of women living with HIV around the world. After many months of discussions and dialogue, the UN and global leaders released the new Sustainable Development Goals framework, also known as Agenda 2030. As we reflect on our accomplishments from the last 15 years, it is also time to look forward to Agenda 2030 and to the important role of women living with HIV in this new development agenda.

Agenda 2030 promises a world of universal respect for human rights and human dignity through the rule of law, justice, equality and non-discrimination.” Importantly, this requires governments worldwide to commit to “work for a significant increase in investments to close the gender gaps and strengthen support for institutions in relation to gender equality and the empowerment of women at the global, regional and national levels” with the goal that “all forms of discrimination and violence against women and girls will be eliminated.” [1]

Understand Why the SDG's are Important to Women Living with HIV

The Global Goals

Agenda 2030 represent an important shared global commitment to improving the lives of people on earth and our environments. Critical to women living with HIV, Agenda 2030 includes Goal 3: “Ensure Healthy Lives and Promote Well-Being for All at All Ages” which includes targets designed to ensure “universal access to sexual and reproductive health-care services, including family planning, information, education, and the integration of reproductive health into national strategies and programmes,” and to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. [2] Agenda 2030 also includes goals on gender equality, sexual reproductive health and rights and ending violence and discrimination.

ICW believes that women living with HIV have a critical role to play in ensuring the effective implementation of the SDGs at the country level and in helping our world achieve the goals set by Agenda 2030.
