“Previously I had lost very many children and… now I have a very beautiful girl. I am a happy mother today because I gave birth to this child… she is a bright girl and very beautiful and I love her so much.” – Woman living with HIV, East Africa.
For many women around the world, motherhood is one of the happiest, fulfilling,
and challenging experiences of their lives. For mothers living with HIV, both
these joys and challenges of motherhood are often felt even more deeply.
The International Community of Women Living with HIV (ICW), the first and only
global network by and for women and girls living with HIV, has worked for over
20 years to address and support the challenges of, as well as collectively
celebrate, mothers living with HIV throughout the world.
Our regional and local networks continue to work tirelessly to secure respectful
maternal care for women living with HIV, including health care free of stigma
and discrimination and autonomy and respect within prevention of mother-to-child
transmission (PMTCT). Our networks provide essential peer support, education,
and mentorship for mothers living with HIV, including treatment preparedness
through treatment literacy and adherence counseling, stigma reduction, and
other forms of psychosocial support including nutritional support.
We also conduct advocacy to enable women living with HIV access safe motherhood
and deliver HIV free children.
This Mother’s Day, take the unique opportunity to honor the special mothers in
your life by making a donation to support mothers living with HIV!
Your gift will help ICW continue its important work supporting and empowering women
and girls living with HIV around the world.
Thank you for your continued support.
